Information for patients: Collection of saliva samples with salivette.

Saliva is collected using a Salivette (see image below), a specialised cotton-like swab (included in shipment). The swab will trap saliva, similar to a sponge.
Always use a new Salivette for each sampling. Store the Salivette dry at room temperature before use.

When to take the salivary sample:

• Take salivary samples just before bedtime(between 9 pm and 11pm) on two consecutive evenings, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. Use a new Salivette for each sample.
• Morning samples, if specifically requested by your doctor: Morning samples should be taken between 7 am and 9 am.

Correct sampling time is important for interpretation the result, because cortisol-levels vary throughout the day.

Follow these instructions for consistent test result:

• Avoid the following for 24 hours before taking the sample:
  

  - licorice
  - grapefruit juice

  - naturopathic preparations

  - nicotine (cigarettes and other tobacco-products (snuff, snus etc.))

• The last 60 minutes before taking the sample:
  

  - Do not eat and drink

  - Do not brush your teeth
  - Avoid anything that can cause wounds or bleeding in your mouth or from your gums, as this will give incorrect results.

• Avoid strenuous physical activity before taking the sample.

• If you use ointments or creams containing hydrocortisone or other corticosteroids, clean yor face and hands thoroughly with warm water and soap before taking the sample.

• Remove the swab from the protective sleeve.
• Place the cotton swab in your mouth for 2 minutes. The swab should become moistened with saliva.
  - Do not chew on the swab.
  - If low saliva production, keep the swab in your mouth until it is completely moistened with saliva.
• Place the swab back into the protective sleeve.
• Put the cap firmly on the sleeve.

Label the outer tube clearly using a water-proof pen:

- Full name ( First/given and sur/family name).

- date of birth/your personal identification number

- date and time of sampling ( both required)

Samples can be stored for up to 2 days in a refrigerator.

Samples can be returned by direct drop-off/courier (preferred) or postal mail.
